چکیده

Multivariate functions are typically governed by anisotropic features such as edges in images or shock fronts in solutions of transport-dominated equations. One major goal both for the purpose of compression as well as for an efficient analysis is the provision of optimally sparse approximations of such functions. Recently, cartoon-like images were introduced in 2D and 3D as a suitable model class, and approximation properties were measured by considering the decay rate of the L error of the best N-term approximation. Shearlet systems are to date the only representation system, which provide optimally sparse approximations of this model class in 2D as well as 3D. Even more, in contrast to all other directional representation systems, a theory for compactly supported shearlet frames was derived which moreover also satisfy this optimality benchmark. This chapter shall serve as an introduction to and a survey about sparse approximations of cartoon-like images by band-limited and also compactly supported shearlet frames as well as a reference for the state-of-the-art of this research field.

Optimally Sparse Representations of 3D Data with C2 Surface Singularities Using Parseval Frames of Shearlets

This paper introduces a Parseval frame of shearlets for the representation of 3D data, which is especially designed to handle geometric features such as discontinuous boundaries with very high efficiency. This system of 3D shearlets forms a multiscale pyramid of well-localized waveforms at various locations and orientations, which become increasingly thin and elongated at fine scales. We prove ...

Optimally Sparse Approximations of Multivariate Functions Using Compactly Supported Shearlet Frames

In this paper, we introduce pyramid-adapted shearlet systems for the three-dimensional setting, and show how one can construct frames for L(R) with this particular shearlet structure. We then introduce a generalized three-dimensional cartoon-like image model class of piecewise C smooth functions with discontinuities on a C smooth surface with 1 < α ≤ 2 and show that pyramid-adapted shearlet sys...

Compactly supported shearlets are optimally sparse

Cartoon-like images, i.e., C functions which are smooth apart from a C discontinuity curve, have by now become a standard model for measuring sparse (non-linear) approximation properties of directional representation systems. It was already shown that curvelets, contourlets, as well as shearlets do exhibit (almost) optimally sparse approximations within this model. However, all those results ar...

Sparsity Equivalence of Anisotropic Decompositions

Anisotropic decompositions using representation systems such as curvelets, contourlet, or shearlets have recently attracted significantly increased attention due to the fact that they were shown to provide optimally sparse approximations of functions exhibiting singularities on lower dimensional embedded manifolds. The literature now contains various direct proofs of this fact and of related sp...
